Wood Gingerbread House Decorations

This year I’m all about simple Christmas decorating
So far, anyway…
Mr. Redoux has almost finished the wood floor in the living room!
So we’ll see if I still keep it simple once that room is ‘done’
But for now, I’m just adding little touches of Christmas
In the spaces where I can
Yesterday I got the idea to make faux gingerbread houses
And I had so much fun with these!
I started with a 2x8 and a 2x6 board we already had in the garage
Then I made some templates of the shapes and sizes I wanted my houses to be
I used the exact width of the boards for my widths
I traced the shapes onto the boards
And I cut them out
We used a miter saw
But you could use a skill saw or a jigsaw to cut them out
Then I lightly sanded each one
Then I stained them and sanded them again
But I didn’t like the look of the stain — too 70’s looking!
So I painted over that with craft paint in ‘Territorial Beige’
I rubbed the paint in and rubbed some of it off so it wasn’t a solid coat
When it was dry, I sanded it down
Letting just a little of the stain and raw wood come through
Then I used Puffy Paint like icing to decorate them
I drew on windows with a chalk pencil
And added detail at the roof
The Puffy Paint takes a little bit of a steady hand and I was doing these at 11:30 last night so some areas are a little squiggly but I think that adds to the rustic home-made gingerbread house charm
To finish them off I sprinkled a little fine iridescent glitter on the roof decoration for just a little subtle sparkle
I added some fairy lights on beaded wire, some bottle brush trees and some bleached pine cones and called it Christmas! See how to bleach pine cones HERE
Now my sitting area feels like it’s ready for the holidays
