How to Keep Trash From Smelling

Don’t you just hate it when your kitchen trash smells?!
Back in the day, I used to wash my trash.
Not just the can, but the actual trash that went into the can too.
I thoroughly rinsed out every can, cup and container before I threw it away. (Back then, there was no recycling) And I never put any food waste in my trash — all of that went into the garbage disposal then down the drain.
I had the most pristine trash you had ever seen and my kitchen always smelled great.
Life was good then…
But today is a different time.
I don’t want to waste water on washing my trash or grinding up food scraps and flushing them down the drain with torrents of water.
So I just started tossing everything in the trash — egg shells, banana peels, coffee grounds, scraps from the dinner plates…
So gross.
And it didn’t take long for it to start smellin’ up the place.
Then, our city asked us to separate our organic waste out of our trash so they can compost it. They gave every homeowner a green plastic bucket with plastic bag inserts to put on our countertop for storing food scraps.
Um, no thank you.
Hard pass on the ugly green bucket on my countertop.
And so began my quest to find something I could put our organic waste into that would actually fit inside my trash can or at the very least inside the trash drawer/cabinet.
And this is what I came up with:
This portable trash bag holder fits right inside my trash can!
I just hang it on the side of the can and I can easily separate the food scraps from the regular trash.
The trash bag holder comes in 3 simple pieces:
All you do is insert the bag into the white frame and roll it over the sides
Then snap on the gray piece over the white piece to hold the bag
And just hook it over the side of your trash can so that it hangs inside the bin.
Put the lid on and you’re ready to go!
Now I can separate my food waste from my other trash right inside my trash can.
I re-use produce bags from the grocery store inside it so I’m recycling the bags as well as helping out my city by keeping organic waste out of my trash.
And the best thing of all —
My trash doesn’t smell any more!
You see, one of the best ways to keep your trash from smelling is to put a lid on it. You want to cover up any food waste so the odor doesn’t get out.
We just take out the bag a couple of times a week and toss it into our yard waste, per our city’s request.
And there’s no mess or smell in our kitchen trash anymore!
You could almost say it’s ‘pristine’…
PS If you compost yourself, you could use this with compostable bags
