Winter Decorating

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

So tell me —

Do you take your Christmas decorations down right after Christmas?

Or do you leave them up until New Year’s?

Or even longer???

I gotta tell ya —

I’m a ‘take it down as soon as it’s over’ kind of girl…

I’ve been known to take it all down Christmas night!

True confession??

I did that this year!

I love how the house is so clean and uncluttered

when everything is cleared off and packed away.

But sometimes it feels a little cold and empty

when all the twinkle lights, candles and greenery are gone.

So here are my tips for keeping it feeling warm and cozy when the holidays are over:

KEEP THE CANDLES BURNING

Whether they’re real or flameless, candles do wonders for warming up your winter decorating.

The candles in our (unfinished) fireplace are real and add a warm cozy glow to a dark empty fire box. The one in the lantern on the shelf is flameless and turns on and off with a remote — it doesn’t get any easier than that!

ADD BLANKETS AND THROWS

There’s nothing better than snuggling up with a blanket on the sofa while watching TV.

I love to use fur, knitted and chenille throws all over the room. Quilts and blankets are good options too. Toss them casually on the sofa or chair. Or fold them neatly over the arm of the sofa. Fold them up and stack them on a bench or toss them in a basket. Blankets and throws add a lot of warmth and texture to your winter decorating. (See how to perfectly style throw blankets HERE)

BRING IN PLANTS

A room can feel a little lifeless when you take all the Christmas trees, garland and greenery down.

Even in winter, house plants add life to your home. Place them all around and it instantly changes the feeling of your room.

PILE ON THE PILLOWS

Pillows, pillows and more pillows!

Pillows are a great accessory. And you’re going to want them warm and textured for your winter decorating. Toss knitted, fur, chenille and sherpa pillows on chairs, sofas and benches. (I keep large baskets around for people to pile the pillows into if they prefer to sit on the furniture without them.)

DON’T FORGET LIGHTING

Daylight hours are short in the winter so you need light in your rooms. Since our remodel isn’t done yet, I’m using what I have on hand and these old lamps are pretty old looking but they work great for adding extra light behind the sofa. Make sure you place lamps around your room to light it up evenly.

So I hope these tips have inspired you to bring on the cozy in your space

because now that Christmas is over

and even though a new year has begun —

we’ve still got a whole lot of winter left to go!
