Here’s what you need to make one:

A hollow plastic ball about 4 1/2 inches in diameter

3/8 inch jute rope

Copper BBs (or other small heavy beads)

Small funnel

Leather boot lace or cord

Drill, craft paint, duct or Gorilla tape, hot glue gun, paper clip

And here’s how to do it:

DRILL A HOLE IN THE PLASTIC BALL

Place the ball on a roll of duct tape to keep it from rolling around and drill a hole just large enough to fit the tip of the funnel into it.

PAINT THE BALL TO MATCH YOUR JUTE ROPE

Paint the ball with craft paint that matches the jute rope and let it dry. This will make the ball less visible between the rows of rope.

FILL THE BALL WITH BBs

Using the funnel, fill the ball about 1/3 to 1/2 full with BBs.

TAPE OVER THE HOLE

Use Gorilla tape to temporarily seal off the hole

START THE ROPE COVERING

Use the end of the rope to start a circle and hot glue the rope to itself as you go around.

Continue around several times, gluing as you go, and forming a bowl shape

GLUE THE ROPE TO THE BALL

Hot glue your rope ‘bowl’ to the bottom of the ball and continue gluing the rope to itself all around the ball until you get near the top of the ball.

DRILL A SECOND HOLE IN THE BALL

Remove the tape from the first hole you drilled and drill a second hole in your ball about 2 inches from the first one.

THREAD THE LEATHER CORD THROUGH THE HOLES

Straighten out a large paperclip and tie one end of the leather cord to the loop on the end of the paperclip. Bend the long end of the paper clip slightly.

Feed the paperclip in through one hole and out the other, pulling the cord behind it.

Untie the cord from the paperclip and tie the ends of the cord together making a loop handle about six inches long.

FINISH THE TOP

Continue wrapping the rope around the ball to the top, gluing as you go and keeping both sides of the leather cord free between the layers of rope.

Drill a third hole a few inches away from the other two at the very top of the ball. Now stuff the cut end of the rope into the hole, winding and gluing the rope until the whole ball is covered.
