How To Store Blankets and Decor

Today I’m all about
How to store my blankets and decor.
We don’t have basements in So Cal
and this house doesn’t have a lot of storage space.
So I have to be creative
when it comes to storing the blankets and accessories I’m not using at the moment.
Now I think armoires are some of the best pieces of furniture you can own.
And I have three of them (and I could always use more!)
We’ve used ours for TV cabinets and bulk item storage (like paper towels, TP, etc.). I’ve even used one of my armoires to store wallpaper books back in the day when I had my decorating studio. And right now, we’re using this one as a pantry until we get our kitchen done.
That’s what I love about them —
So many ways to use them!
This is the armoire that’s in our living room right now.
It went through a major renovation! You can read about it HERE
It was quite a process but I’m so happy with the way it turned out!
I took the doors off of it at Christmas so I could use it for display
and I’ve decided I like it that way for a while.
So when I needed a place to put some of my decorating stuff,
this was perfect because I could still display it!
So if you have an armoire…
And some blankets and decore you need to store…
Here are some tips for styling your storage/display:
START WITH A CLEAN SLATE
Take everything out of your armoire.
Clean the shelves and the top.
Get all your things together that you want to put in it
THINK ABOUT THE OUTSIDE FIRST
What can you ‘store’ on top?
I have a branch and a large sea-glass bottle I like to keep on top of mine.
And how about the sides on the floor?
Do you have an identical pair of something?
Large urns… Plants in pots… Vintage stools…
I have these cedar bushes I bought at Christmas but they look great for everyday decor.
They’re perfect on the floor on either side of the cabinet.
START WITH YOUR LARGE PIECES INSIDE
Now you want to start putting things inside.
Start with your largest pieces and put them on different shelves.
There are deep spaces in the bottom of this armoire that are perfect for these large baskets.
The trick to styling a space like this is to use large pieces — it looks best with individual pieces that fill the space on the shelf.
ADD YOUR SOFT PIECES
We have lots of blankets, throws and pillows that we keep on hand for snuggling up on chilly nights
I folded the blankets and throws and stacked them neatly in the cupboard.
Now we can just grab one when we need it.
And if I want to use the urns or stone pedestal bowl or baskets, I can take them out and replace them with something else I’m not using at the moment.
ACCESSORIZE
And then I added the smallest pieces last.
Plaster squares… More pillows… More throws…
It looks best if you have a grouping of smaller similar items
See how the three plaster squares and two lumbar pillows work because they’re grouped together?
Eventually, I’ll add a few plants on the top shelf to give it some life but for now, I’m just using things I already have that need to be stored.
Of course, I could put the doors back on this but I really like seeing everything on display. It adds interest and texture and lightens up that corner of the room.
This idea would also work for a large bookcase or hutch.
So where do you store your decor items when you’re not using them?
I’d love to hear your ideas!
