How To Make A Living Wall With Pallets

(This post contains affiliate links)

I’ve been feeling lately like our Guest Bath needs a little life

I love the makeover we gave it (you can see it HERE)

But I haven’t had any time to accessorize it

So last weekend I decided it was time to do something interesting on the wall above the commode

And here’s what I came up with

We had a couple of pallets laying around so we tore one of them apart and used the wood from that

It’s pretty rough but I wanted it a little rustic

I had ordered some ceramic half-moon planters and I decided I liked the look of those on the pallet wood

We laid them out to figure out the finished size I was going to need

Then we cut all the pieces to length

Next we nailed them together on the back with a 2 1/2 inch piece of wood from the pallet

We made sure all the ends were even by using a straight edge and then we nailed them with about a quarter inch gap between them

Then we did the same on the other end

Then we sanded the whole thing just to knock some of the really rough spots down

Next we added wood aging accelerator to the raw edges so they would blend in with the rest of the aged wood

Then the whole thing got 2 coats of polyurethane

After we laid out the ceramic planters, we marked where each screw hole would be located

Since pallet wood splits pretty easily, we pre-drilled the spot where each screw was going to go

Then we numbered each planter based on where it’s located on the pallet because each planter has a slightly different hole configuration

Then we put in the screws

Now it’s time to mount it to the wall

We screwed it to the wall making sure we went into the studs

Now it’s ready for the planted planters

We used succulents because that seems to be the only plants I can keep alive these days

But you could use any house plant you like

Once the planters were all planted, we just hung each one on the screws in the order we noted on them
