Caring For House Plants

THEY’RE STILL ALIVE! (mostly…)

A whole month after buying a bunch of indoor plants and using them for decor in my house (you can see the post HERE), most of them are actually still alive and thriving!

So far, only 2 haven’t made it

May they rest in peace…

But the rest are doing pretty well!

I’ve never been very good at keeping indoor plants alive (you can read about that HERE)

In my house in Northern California, my house plants got watered once a week, every Monday. They didn’t get hardly any light and they got fed about every 3 months if they were lucky. But they did alright.

Down here in SoCal, my house is super bright and I water them frequently but nothing seems to survive.

Until now…

This time I decided to be a good plant mom and make a concentrated effort to keep these babies alive!

So what has made the difference?

This little device…

When it comes to caring for house plants, I’ve come to realize that plants need attention on their schedule, not mine. And they might not all need water at the same time. So I’ve been using this moisture meter that was my mom’s and it’s a game-changer!

Now I know when a plant is dry and needs to be watered and when it’s not and can go another day or two!

I just go around and check each one every couple of days or so and water only as they need it.

What a concept, huh?

I can tell you it really seems to be working because my plants are so happy!

I’m especially excited that my ivy topiary is doing really well!

I have it in a sunny spot in the sitting area in my office and it loves it there. I’ve never been able to keep ivy alive until now!

So if you’ve been struggling to keep your plant babies alive and need help caring for house plants, get yourself a moisture meter — it takes all the guesswork out of watering!
