Let It Snow
Does it snow where you live?
It doesn’t snow here in Southern California
but when we lived in Northern California, we would get snow a few times a year.
The snow there was hardly ever light and fluffy. It usually was a wet, heavy kind of snow. The kind that snaps trees in half and brings down power lines.
I loved sitting inside by the fire when it was snowing outside.
And white Christmases were the best —
We would be in the kitchen decorating Christmas cookies
while huge white flakes
floated down right outside the windows…
But having to go out in it —
Well, that was a different story!
Now, I’m not talking about getting in the car and driving somewhere —
that was easy.
We had a 4-wheel drive SUV and driving in the snow was kind of fun for me
(you just have to remember to turn into the skid!)
No, I’m talking about when you have to go out and do something IN it.
Like when your daughter is home from school because it’s a snow day
and she’s watching TV
and the satellite dish goes out because it’s caked with snow (for the third time…)
so you put on your wellies
and your gloves
and your heavy snow jacket
and your hat
and you tromp out in it (for the third time…)
and this time it’s just a little higher than the top of your boots
and you get a boot full of icy cold, wet snow.
And now your feet are soaking wet
but you stay the course
‘cause that dish isn’t gonna clear itself.
So you grab the garden hose
and stretch your arm out toward the sky
and aim at the dish
(which, by the way, is two stories up on the top of the roof)
and pull the trigger…
And why is it that those nozzles always leak
and more water runs down your arm and into your jacket
than actually goes up and hits the dish???
But again, you keep at it
‘cause Sister wants to watch Gilmore Girls.
So you keep aiming toward the dish in the sky
as more water gushes down your arm
until you just can’t take any more icy cold water running down inside your Long Janes
and you’re so wet
and so cold
and so frustrated
that you throw the hose down
and the nozzle slams down through a foot of snow
and lands perfectly on the trigger on the driveway below
and shoots a stream of icy cold water
right smack in your face!
I hear Northern California had the worst snowstorm on record a couple of weeks ago.
Gosh, I miss those days…
